I mainly say this to my Algebra 2 students, but I'm pointing this at my Geometry students now too.
I mention often that those who do well in Algebra 2 go on and do well in high school, college, and life in general. A new study has come out and proved this once again. This article talks about the latest study done on the topic. A Level-3 math class generally means Algebra 2. Notice in the article is says doing nothing about scoring all As in these tough classes. Just by taking them (and trying to do well) improves your odds of going to a 4 year college almost 10%!!! Who wouldn't want a better shot of going to college?
Now I know that several of my students are a bit older and think that this does not apply to them anymore. I'm telling you now this is false. Who do you think does better in college: the student who slacked off and gave up at the end of their senior year because they think it "doesn't matter anymore" or the student who still worked hard to prove that she/he could finish their course?
So to be brief: freshmen/sophomores- Shape up and work hard. You are at the early part where your actions/decisions now are going to affect the rest of high school and what colleges you can attend. Juniors/seniors- Shape up and work hard. Its never too late to get these skills, and they will still go a long way to helping you out in the end.

A Company Town
Well, we do live in Los Angeles, which is possibly most globally recognized for Hollywood. Therefore, it is time to celebrate our cinematic culture with all the glitz and glamor and watch the Academy Awards.
I'll spare you all the details and fun facts that I've amassed over the years (though it may sneak out in extra credit questions throughout the semester). For a quick look at who is nominated, Moviefone has published their yearly printable ballot, so you can make your predictions on the winners and losers this year at the Hollywood and Highland Center in Hollywood, California (yes, it is no longer the Kodak Theater since Kodak filed for bankruptcy earlier this year and said they are leaving their sponsorship of the venue).
So I leave it up to you all now: who do you think is going to take home Best Picture this year?

Photograph Exhibit
I'm excited for this. For the next few weeks, there is going to be a free gallery showing of some lesser Ansel Adams works. For those that don't know/remember him, he took some very well known photographs of nature, especially of Yosemite National Park (see: Google Images of Ansel Adams). The photos that will be on display are of Los Angeles circa 1940. They say that they are definitely not his best work, but a. I love his photographic style and b. I love anything relating to the history of Los Angeles. There is an LA Times Article about the exhibit as well.
It is at drkrm, 727 S Spring St, Los Angeles, CA 90014. It is open Wed-Sat, noon-6pm until March 17.
